The .SE country-code top-level domain extension was started in 1986 and assigned to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration process was quite restrictive, so a very low number of domains were purchased. Individuals could reserve only one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was necessary, i.e. only Swedish persons, companies and organizations could book a .SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized notably and, as a consequence, the number of dot SE domains has been rising each year.
