The term “hosting” does not describe one service, but a variety of services that offer numerous functions to a domain. Having a website and emails, as an illustration, are two independent services although in the general case they come together, so many people think of them as one single service. In fact, every single domain has a couple of DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that deals with each particular service - the first one is a numeric IP address, that defines where the website for the domain is loaded from, while the latter is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that deals with the emails for the domain name. For example, an A record can be 123.123.123.123 and an MX record is mx1.domain.com. Whenever you open a website or send an e-mail, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a Internet domain has and the traffic/message is first directed to that company. If you have custom records on their end, the Internet browser request or the email will be sent to the correct server. The concept behind working with separate records is that the two services work with different web protocols and you could have your website hosted by one service provider and the e-mail messages by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Shared Hosting

If you have a shared hosting account with our company and you want to move either your site or your e-mails to another service provider, it will take you literally simply 2 clicks to do so. Our Hepsia CP comes with an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domains and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you are going to be able to see and change the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you choose to use a different email provider and they ask you to create more MX records than the default 2, it will not take more than a couple of clicks either to add them. You can even set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the higher the priority a particular MX record will have. The propagation of any record that you change or create will not take more than several hours and if needed, you will also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which shows how long a record will stay active after it's modified or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

Accessing and editing the A or MX records for any of your domain names or subdomains is really easy if you get a semi-dedicated server plan from our company. The accounts are handled using our in-house built Hepsia CP, which has a section devoted to the DNS records of your domain addresses. The latter is going to be listed alphabetically and you can click on any one of them to see both the A and the MX records. Changing any record is as simple as entering the new one in a text box and saving the change, so even when you have never dealt with such matters before, you will not encounter any issues if you choose to switch your website or e-mails to some other company while keeping the second service with our company. If needed, you could also set up additional MX records and set a certain priority based on the instructions of the new provider.
